Muncaster Chase stands just
back from the A595. Keep on the A595 past the turn to Ravenglass
and continue on past the main Muncaster Castle car park. Approximately
250 yards past the main entrance to the Castle, the road rises
quite steeply and bears sharp right. As it does so, there is
a partially concealed entrance on your left (just past the
bridleway). Turn in, follow the drive to your left and park
outside the house (the drive is circular - no need to turn
around when you leave!). If you overshoot, you may turn around
in the Church/Garden Centre car park at the back of Muncaster
Castle (first turning on the right past the Chase) and retrace
your steps.
From the SOUTH:
We recommend leaving the M6 at Junction
36. Take the A590 as far as Greenodd - then turn onto the
A595 and stay on it all the way to the coast, where it turns
sharp right at Silecroft. Keep on it towards Ravenglass.
As you approach an old humpback bridge over the River Esk,
you will see Muncaster Castle on the fellside to your left.
Cross the bridge and follow the road up the hill. At the
top of the hill, approximately 250 yards past the turn to
Muncaster Garden Centre and Church, there is a partially
hidden driveway on the right (you can see Muncaster Chase
amongst the trees on the hillside to your right before you
get to the driveway - it is a handsome, pink granite building).
Turn in, follow the drive around to your left and park outside
the house (the drive is circular - no need to turn around
when you leave!). If you overshoot the drive, you may continue
down the A595 and turn around in Muncaster Castle's car park,
then retrace your steps.
There is further car parking at the back of the house. Instead
of following the drive to the front, branch left at the top
of the drive around the side of the house - the car park
is directly ahead of you.
(Note: Unless you are confident tackling very narrow, unfenced
moorland roads and extremely steep hills, do NOT be tempted
by the roads on the map that look like shortcuts!)
By Rail:
When travelling by rail, it is necessary to change at either Carlisle
(coming from the north) or Preston (coming from the south). There
is a railway station at Ravenglass, which is approximately 1 mile
from the Centre - uphill. It is only a small station with no taxi
rank. If a taxi is required, it will have to be pre-booked.
Many visitors prefer to catch a West Coast main line train
to either Oxenholme or Penrith and hire a car for the remainder
of the journey.
We will happily supply you with contact details for car
hire firms and taxis in the area on request.
If you wish to check train times or purchase tickets on-line,
go to:

By Air:
The nearest airport is Manchester International
which is approximately 125 miles from the Centre. The next
nearest is Glasgow Airport, which is about 150 miles. From
there you may either hire a car or arrange a chauffeur-driven
collection. Several local firms will do an airport pick-up
and delivery, but we can highly recommend:

Workington
